Ardent Photography | by Rick & Stephanie Osborne bio picture

Thanks for visiting the Ardent Photography Blog!

We are creative, imaginative and casual. Stephanie will be the photographer in flip flops, climbing on the furniture to get a better angle. Rick will be the one charming you and all your guests, taking those must have pictures without you even knowing he was there! We both have a great sense of humor and try to make our clients feel right at home.

Weddings are so much more to us than just an event. It is the story of two families becoming one. Your wedding photos are your first family heirloom. We are honored to be the ones to tell your story.

- Rick & Stephanie

Formspring | About

A little while ago I was introduced to the newest form of social media… Formspring. Through formspring one can basically set up a profile through which people can ask them any question in the entire world, include their own information or choose to be anonymous. Photographers find it particularly helpful because for some reason we tend to get a lot of questions about our business. What equipment we use, what settings to use for which situations, advice we would give photographers that are just starting out. Maybe clients want to know what our favorite part of a wedding is, our favorite photo or why we love what we do. Having this question and answer type of forum immediately sounded like such a valuable resource for Rick and I. Wanna be the person with all the answers? Well you have to start by asking the right questions… Check us out on formspring at http://www.formspring.me/ardentphoto, and when you do ask us a question!

Here is a sampling of some of the things people have asked…

Why do you like coffee so much?  - I didn’t always like coffee… now I cannot picture life without it lol. Coffee is comfort, relaxation, exuberation and for some reason a part of who I am lol

What is your favorite part of a wedding? - My favorite part of the wedding can be found in the exchange between the bride and groom. In so many ways a wedding is like a production. So much time is spent tending to the guests and taking care of all those traditions and todo’s. But when the night starts to wind down and you can see the bride and groom, all lovey dovey, amazed and in awe of what they have just done… well the peace of this is my favorite part!

What is your favorite picture that you have taken? - My favorite photo, which was taken by me is of an aspen tree grove in Rocky Mountain National park. It was taken during a time of change in my life and makes me all teary eyed seeing it, even today. That is why I love photography, because of an images ability to bring you back to a time and a place.

If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would you choose? - I think currently I would choose to be on the cover of Southern Weddings magazine. I know LARA is super selective since it is her baby. If one of my images was selected for the cover I would be crazy excited after having finally ‘made it big.’

Andrea & Jared… The Slideshow | Products

This past year we started to do slideshows for our senior photo shoots. Something about seeing their photos set to their favorite songs was just magic for both Rick and I and our clients. I absolutely love taking the photos we created and putting them to good use, seeing them printed, published, made into a slideshow! So we have made the decision to start including a slideshow for our engagement sessions as well. Romantic, playful, fun and upbeat… the song choice is entirely up to you. Andrea & Jared, who are our first lucky recipients chose “Hey Soul Sister” by Train. What a fun song, I hadn’t heard it before but am definitely adding it to my ipod! Without further adeau, enjoy!

Friday, I’m In Love | Life

This Friday, I’m In Love… with forgotten comfort. I didn’t BECOME a photographer until later in life. Contrary to my poor punctuation, horrendous spelling and inability to stay on track, if you would have asked me early on in life what I would be when I grew up, I would have said I would be a writer. I used to dream up short stories, typing them out on an old typewriter — because I loved the way the print on paper would make them look. I would share them with friends and family, filling boxes upon boxes with words. My head was filled with the plots of the many books that I vowed to write, someday. I kept a journal from a very early age and as soon as I was old enough to really understand it’s meaning I started an on again off again love affair with poetry. Byron, Plath, Poe… I felt like I knew them all and would find myself lost in their work. I remember sitting on the Tattered Cover’s plushy furniture with an old friend, scouring poetry anthologies for something that spoke to me. I soon discovered that writing poetry gave me the same feeling as I now get from creating great photography! My world made sense if I could just get everything I was thinking, everything I was feeling down on paper. My poor mother, I think she finally threw out the boxes and boxes of ‘original Stephanie Ann’s’ that have been stored at her house for nearly a decade now lol.

I don’t know what on earth made me think about this today, but before I knew it I was searching for my favorites poems on the internet all afternoon lol. One of my absolute favorite poets, whose work I would highly recommend reading is E.E. Cummings. I thought for this Friday, I’m In Love post, it might be nice to share one of my favorite poems… The photo is from our trip to Paris and for sale for charity through our Fine Art Benefit for Haiti.

Impatience | About

Recently I did a feature on Danielle Odil of Something Classic Events… She said something that I fell in love with absolutely, “I love what I do and I show it by learning and growing my business each year.” Rick and I are constantly striving to better ourselves as photographers. We try to evolve, progress and become every single time we pick up a camera. One of the very important ways that we invest in our craft (and thus in our clients) is by upgrading and utilizing different techniques and equipment. I am happy to announce that Rick and I are officially the proud parents of two new lenses. These lenses will be arriving just in time for Nicole and Brian’s engagement session, we are beyond thrilled to be able to have them in our arsenal for this great couple!

Curious to know which lenses we bought? Well of course you know that I am going to tell you. For our blog readers who are not well versed in geeky photog lingo I will try and translate as best as I can. It probably shows in my images but I love to shoot close up. I am addicted to using my telephoto lens and have developed a style that is very up close and personal. As a photographer I wanted to be able to show a fresh perspective to our clients and be able to showcase more of the amazing scenery that we are blessed to have, include more of the atmosphere when it comes to weddings and shoot a little bit wider. My new lens choice was the Nikon 35 mm f/1.8. A photographer friend of mine, Tony Hoffer (whose photography I admire) once said in an interview that if he had to choose one lens to shoot with for the rest of his life, a 35 mm would be it! I am excited to change things up a little bit and really broaden my horizons.

Ok so there is one new lens explained and accounted for. What else did we decide on? Well Rick’s new ‘baby’ is a 11-16 mm f/2.8. For as long as I can remember Rick has been fond of photographer Emin Kuliyev. He has this amazingly different perspective on a moment, often shooting from directly above or directly below his subjects. This is extremely hard to do and really only possible with a very wide lens, which allows you to take a picture from very VERY close to something. This new lens will make this possible for Rick, I am crazy excited to see what he will do with this lens (no pressure lol).

So what’s with the title? Why wouldn’t I just name it “look at our blog we just bought some new lenses!”? Well anyone who knows me knows that I have absolutely NO patience. I am the girl who opens her Christmas presents two weeks early, gives my mother her Valentine’s day card in January and tries to celebrate my husband’s birthday absolutely as soon as he will let me. Waiting until TUESDAY to be able to play is going to be agony. Well worth the wait (I suppose). Being as they won’t be here until then I can only share some lovely stock photo goodness from the lovely lens makers themselves. Aren’t they pretty?

Alyssa & Chad…Engagement Guestbook | Products

You might remember Alyssa & Chad from their WY engagement session earlier this month. Even though it was just above freezing, we had a great time and came away with some lovely photos. SO many lovely photos in fact that these two opted to have a custom designed engagement guestbook created! The premise behind this is to put their engagement photos to good use, filling an entire book for wedding guests to sign on the big day. I was so pleased with how it turned out I just had to share!

Custom Wedding Album…The Video | Products

Tonight I am ‘telemeeting’ with a new potential bride… We actually work with lot of brides who aren’t in our area and are unable to meet in person and see our products for themselves. The same way I believe every blog post should have big bold beautiful photos, I really don’t think that an email or even a blog post does our custom designed wedding albums justice. I know quite a few people that have turned to video blogging… I thought that making a video blog about our albums would be an excellent way to not only tell but SHOW you more about them. So sit back, pop some popcorn (I am long winded) and enjoy some information on our albums!

Dave Stubbart - Great video Stephanie, I thought it was the perfect length...not long winded at all!

Kirsten - I think this is SUCH a great idea Stephanie and it was quite interesting. What a great resource for your brides!!

Charlene - Ok, now I am really curious to see that album!! You will have to bring it with you when we see you guys in the next few months. On that note, when you have a free moment could you send me some info on prices/options/ideas for newborn sessions?

Something Classic Events | Vendors

Putting on a wedding can sometimes be a daunting task. For most of our clients this is their first time planning an event of this magnitude and they have no idea where to start! I am of the belief that if you invest in the important things and work with wedding vendors who love what they do (ok so they have to be good at what they do as well…) you are setting yourself up for success from the very beginning. In addition to featuring our couples and the day to day ramblings of our own company I thought it would be very beneficial to brides to highlight some of our favorite vendors. This week we will be highlighting Danielle Odil of Something Classic Events.

Danielle is such a sweetheart! The fact the her profession is her passion comes across in everything she does. She is precisely the kind of person you want helping you with your big day. We first worked together back in 2006. Her first wedding as a planner also just happened to be the first wedding I photographed. Who was the lucky bride? Becky Young, whose lovely photos you see in this feature, is a bride turned amazing wedding photographer and was the lucky gal to introduce us both to what an AWESOME wedding looks like. Big thank you to both Becky for the lovely photos of Danielle’s work, as well as Danielle herself for taking the time to tell us more about her business. It may sound cheesy but we always tell our brides that a great wedding planner is worth their weight in gold. If your on the market for a planner and looking for a stress free, memorable day definitely check out Something Classic Events.

Wanna know more about Danielle?

How long have you been an event planner:

I started my business in the Fall of 2006

Who or what got you started in the wedding industry?

I have always known that I wanted to be in events in some way. While I was in college I opted for a degree in marketing, because of the events side of the degree. I didn’t know if it was on the hotel end or what, but after I planned my own wedding, I knew that was what I wanted to do.

How would you describe your approach to wedding planning?

Personal and fun.  The wedding should reflect the couple so it is important to get to know them and make sure their personalities are shown throughout the wedding.  I love getting to know the couples before the wedding.  People have definitely said we are also fun.  Your wedding day should be fun, so we make sure to take care of all the details so you are able to have a good time.  I have fun too (you may or may not seeing me dancing or singing on the outskirts of your party), I love what I do so that in turn makes it enjoyable for me.

How did you decide on your company name?

I went off the old adage something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.  Every event, whether it be wedding or birthday party or graduation, it should be classic so I married the two and got Something Classic.

What do you remember most about the very first event you planned?

I remember having the feeling that this is what I am supposed to do.  And I remember being so thankful to the couple for giving me the chance to start my business with them, you know who you are!

What is your favorite part of being a wedding planner?

I love seeing everything come together after planning the wedding, seeing the bride before she goes down aisle and the father-daughter dance.  I also love seeing how each couple plans their wedding – it is great to see so many different perspectives.

What do you find to be the most challenging part of your job?

My schedule of meetings and weddings is outside of normal business hours, including many late nights.  I have a great idea and want to call someone one it, but then I realize it is after hours and I have to wait until the next day – happens all the time!

Where would be your dream destination wedding?

Somewhere in the Caribbean.

Where do you find inspiration?

Anything from magazines to blogs to the venue to the couples themselves.  It is all around and I love when couples think outside the wedding box.  I also have an obsession with Martha Stewart!

How important in your opinion is hiring good wedding photographer when planning a wedding?

This is near and dear to my heart because I had a good photographer, but not a good wedding photographer.  Photography is the one thing you get to have forever after your wedding.  Sure, you may have a video or pictures from family member, but a good wedding photographer can capture moments others can’t.  I have heard (and I am one of them) past brides say they are disappointed in their pictures and they wish they could do it over.  You can’t do it over and once the day comes and goes, it is all you will have.  You only have this one time and so you should make the best of it.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I see myself still planning weddings and enjoying it.  I see myself taking a little more time with my family and not stressing so much about the little things.  I also see a couple more kids.

What wedding industry blogs or websites do you read often?

I read so many it is crazy – really, you should see my google reader, it is insane.  Some of the ones I follow are Style Me Pretty, Wedding Chicks, Sage Wedding Pros, Design Sponge, Hostess with the Mostess, JuneBug Weddings, and 100 layer cake.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

I am having a hard time thinking of just one… maybe Meet Joe Black or A Walk to Remember.  I am a sucker for a romantic movie, just ask my husband.  Oh, maybe The Blind Side, I love football too…

What is one food that you absolutely cannot live without?

Pasta – any kind with almost any sauce.  I have an addiction to noodles in different shapes and sizes – Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, you name it and I probably have a pasta for it.

Why should a newly engaged couple hire a wedding planner for their big day?

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming and time consuming.  We will guide you through the planning process and let you know when it is time to accomplish a certain task.  We can help you with any and all vendors saving you time (and money! Time is money right?).  We can wade through all the vendors out there (and there are a lot) point you in the direction of vendors that work within your budget and style.  We receive no kickbacks in ANY way from the vendors we recommend, we just love them and love working with them.  Most of all, we take away stress.  The day of the wedding should be filled with family and friends, not worrying about favors, escort cards and centerpieces.  We do all of that so you can relax.

What do you feel is the main thing that differentiates you from other wedding planners?

Passion and Professionalism…  You have to be passionate in this kind of job.  I love what I do and I show it by learning and growing my business each year.  This is not a regular job it includes weekends, evenings and sometimes 14 hour days, you could not keep that up unless you love what you do.  I am also professional.  I have a strong work ethic and take pride in my work.  I may not be perfect but I do work very hard for you.

What would a blog post be without some gorgeous photos of Danielle’s work in action…  Thank you again to Becky Young.

Keri Doolittle Photography - Great post Rick and Stephanie!! Danielle, your work is amazing!!

Events By Emily - Great article...lovely photos!

Andrea & Jared | Engagement

Everyone knows the old saying that true love lasts a lifetime… Andrea and Jared are living proof! When Rick and I first met these two, one thing that immediately stood out was how much fun they have with one another. You could tell that they were old friends, finished each others sentences and were practically made for one another. It wasn’t until we headed out for their engagement session that we discovered why, turns out they have been sweethearts for over a decade now! Looking for a little bit city, a little bit outdoors and a lot of bit fun we all headed downtown to Denver for their session.

Rick and I like to explore with our couples. In our opinion nothing is more of a disservice to our clients than taking them to the same over photographed locations that you see all the time. Denver is such an amazing city, there are so many nooks & crannies, side streets, bridges and alleyways… When we designed Andrea & Jared’s session we may have gone a little overboard though! In total I think we must have walked about a 2 mile loop, stopping to take pictures at the best parts the city has to offer. Andrea made the entire trek in heels, never complaining once making her officially the most talented woman I have ever met! We love how casual, spontaneous and fun their pictures are. Jared kept Andrea (and us) laughing the entire afternoon with his hilarious antics.

Jared and Andrea we had a great time with you two. Thank you for being so wonderful… We absolutely cannot wait for your big day! As always we would love to share some of our favorites:

Justin - I love these guys! They are so awesome. You look so great in the pics, and I love the LoDo feel to them!

sam hassas - Great set Steph. 2 and 5 are really good. :)

Sneak Peek | Engagements

Today Rick and I had the pleasure of photographing Andrea & Jared’s engagement session in Denver. The day started very early as we headed out to scout locations. We spent the rest of this gorgeous afternoon getting to know these two. Normally I try to blog our favorites from each session the same day that they are shot. We have just gotten back into town however and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little sleepy and a lot sore (man we walked like 8 miles today, Andrea you are one amazing girl!). But I couldn’t head to bed without posting at least one photo from today’s session. The was one of my favorites… Stay tuned tomorrow for a proper post :)

Friday, I’m In Love | Life

When Rick saw what I was writing this post about he just shook his head. Maybe it’s a girl thing but this Friday, I’m In Love… with being well moisturized lol! I don’t know why but I have always been a lotion snob. I put a different kind of lotion on my hands, face, feet and body lol. I can recognize scents, think it should have a particular texture and never ever leave home without my favorites. It’s my own personal version of hell to go swimming or wash my hands without applying a good moisturizer afterwards. It may be silly but being well moisturized is a HUGE part of my daily life.

Silly idea for a post perhaps but I thought it would be nice to highlight some of the products that make my day to day living so nice! I would definitely recommend trying each and every one of these products. They are my ‘must haves’, my ‘can’t live without’s’ and staples in the Osborne household.

Dove Cream Oil Lotion - Lotion is lotion, right? WRONG. When you use the right kind of body lotion your skin absolutely glows and feels so soft to the touch. Before finding Dove I was a huge fan of a few of the more expensive body lotions. I was spending a small fortune with how much I would use. Dove Cream Oil is super affordable, lasts a long time and smells good too!

Alba Coconut Cream Lip Balm - I hate having dry lips, but loathe that waxy feel of chap stick. Alba is thicker than normal chap stick and does really feel like a ’chapcream’ lol. It’s not waxy whatsoever, smells delicious and even tastes great. I get mine at Walmart in the beauty section…

Emerge Peppermint Foot Cream - This foot cream is a thick luxurious container of heaven for your feet. Not only does it smell like yummy peppermint it also makes your toes tingle when you apply it. I believe it is only available through Gold Canyon.

Victorias Secret Love Spell - I’ve found people fall into one of two categories: those that like Bath and Body Works lotion and those that love Victorias Secret. I am definitely a Victorias Secret kind of girl. I love their entire line but am especially fond of the Love Spell scent. Its a little bit floral, a little bit citrus and a lot sexy. Their body butter is similar to the foot cream I mentioned above in that it goes on thick and really feels like heaven on your skin.

St Ives Apricot Scrub - The secret to having soft skin to moisturize is starting with a good exfoliator. St Ives is an apricot scrub that uses walnut shells to get rid of dead dull skin. I use this everyday…

Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition - I love my long hair. My husband likes it curly but most of the time for ease I straighten it. When you straighten your hair every split end shows and if your hair is dry and dull it will definitely show. I used to buy my shampoo and conditioner from my salon and deep condition with a hot oil every week. Twenty five dollars a bottle was a deal, that was until I found Garnier Triple Nutrition. I love their shampoo and alternate between using their conditioner and deep conditioner every other day.

Through trial and error I stumbled upon these products and thought you all might like to know about them. What are your must have beauty products? Leave me a comment with your go to’s, I would love to hear about them.

Charlene Madrid - Xander and I use the same lotion. We both have mild eczema. Highly recommend it.
